Welcome

Welcome to the blog of Newcastle New Music: a mini-festival

This series of events will take place between 17 and 21 February 2010 at ICMuS (International Centre for Music Studies) at Newcastle University.

Details will be posted here as they become available.

The mini-festival is being built around the visit of four international figures to ICMuS: the Swedish composer Kent Olofsson, the Swedish guitarist Stefan Östersjö, the Swedish flautist Terje Thiwång and the Swiss guitarist Christoph Jäggin.

Newcastle New Music also takes advantage of the ripples from the last project of CETL's I3: a workshop of student compositions on 14 February by Northern Sinfonia and a concert on 16 February 2010 at 8 PM in The Sage Gateshead Hall Two. At this concert Northern Sinfonia, conducted by Peter Wiegold, will play music by Richard Rijnvos, John Casken, Kent Olofsson, Agustín Fernández and students from Newcastle University and the University of Durham.

In keeping with the educational mission of ICMuS, the mini-festival has a strong emphasis on teaching and learning. All our visiting composers will engage in some form of interaction with students, and they will come together in a symposium that will launch the mini-festival, on the topic Teaching and learning composition today: what higher education has done, can do and should do to nurture creative talent.
